i need a little bit of help in gathering some information for my mother who's still in.
i've left (faded) and she wants me to come back.
anyway, she started ranting about the sex abuse scandal of the catholic church (which she was part of 20 years ago).
Thanks jwfacts. I'll look at those links now.
Btw, your website is great. It really helped me to "see the light"!
as long as you have family still in the jw`s..there`s always going to be problems..it does`nt go away.........................outlaw
Sadly, no. Not even close. I thought I was doing pretty well but today an elder rang me and I was shaking for hours after. The conversation was mostly small-talk but he said something about wanting to say more to me but his wife had just returned so he'd call back later. My stomach has been churning all day because of this. I don't want my life to be about dreading the phone ringing but that's how it is right now. ARGH!
Just when I thought I was doing ok. . . And now I wonder if I'll ever get over the JW thing.

Thank-you! That's a really good starting point.

Anyway, she started ranting about the sex abuse scandal of the Catholic church (which she was part of 20 years ago). I told her about the $12m JW payout etc. She asked why they had to pay and I said it was because their procedures don't make them report it to the authorities and that they hide behind clergy priviledge.
I have scans of the Elders book and all the policy letters that are to do with this matter. They seem to have a nicey-nicey letter that they read to the cong in 2002 but the real policies are in slightly older letters. However, I can't find anything about hiding behind clergy priviledge.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I feel like I might be able to get thru to her with this.
Thank-you,
Am
does anyone remember the bbc panorama on child sexual abuse within the jws?
it was about 6 or 7 years ago that it was on.
i was wondering if anyone has info on where to find the program or at least some clips of it.

Thanks.
most of us often wonder with amazement how we ever got caught up in the jehovah's witnesses mind control after having been out for awhile.
and we still wonder how some of our relatives stay trapped inside it.
well, steve hassans book " releasing the bonds " explains briefly in chapter 4 how it can happen.
Any new life changing event can make one vulnerable, marriage, death, birth of a child, divorce, etc..... People fear the unknown and along come the jw's who have ALL the answers and it makes life much easier, don't have to think of a thing! it's all been done for you by the brothers.
I think them seeming to have ALL the answers was what attracted my mother. She had started reading the bible not long before the JWs called. She prayed to God for help in understanding it and a couple of weeks later, knock knock! An answer to a prayer or what?! Very hard now to get her to see reason as the emotional impact of that event was pretty intense and still is really.
I try hard but feel like I'm banging my head off a brick wall in the end
hubby gladring and i were having a chat in the car recently.
we got to talking about how america is such a fertile breeding ground for nutjobs and their nutjob "religions" - no offense to any yanks but it is true!.
we were talking about it coz of the upcoming us elections and how all the candidates are professed christians whose religious views and practises are as scrutinised as anything else during their campaign.
And I spent all morning worrying that I'd offended you! Glad I didn't.
reading steve hassan's books has brought to mind the many ways jehovah's witnesses use fear and guilt catch phrases to keep the rank and file members from leaving the cult and gaining their freedom.
see if you recognize some of these and if they produce fear or guilt.
" you have to keep up with the latest truths or you'll be left behind if you don't keep up with jehovah's organization and new light .
Re stumbling others - there is a flipside to that. Ps 119:165
Abundant peace belongs to those loving your law,
And for them there is no stumbling block. (NWT)
So even if you are being legitimately stumbled by someone's actions, if you really really love God's law then you wouldn't be stumbled in the first place. So you can't win!

Oh goodness no Missinglink! I wasn't even thinking of you guys at all when I said that. Sorry.
We really enjoyed meeting you all and hope we can do it again sometime.
I just meeant the way the laws are over there and all this talk of freedoms seems to make way for these crazy sects and cults that would find it very difficult to exist in other countries.
